Good Morning and Happy Thursday!

We are two days away from 2017 and I am stoked! I love the possibilities that a new year brings! 2016 was a pretty ok year for us. We had some ups and downs, and I can say that I learnt from it all and now you can to!

Lesson 1 – Follow Your Passions

This year I finished my Therapists Assistants diploma, which is my second diploma. When Imade the decision to go back to school I was a wreck. I had very little direction in my life, no financial stability and my dreams were quickly fading. I was stressed to the max, and didn’t know what to do about any of it. It was my Mr. that suggested that I go back to school to find what I really want to do. I’ve always known that I wanted to help others live the best life that they can, and so when I looked into ways that I could do that (and be employed) I found this course. The last two years were amazing, I made so many great friends that inspired and pushed me to be a better person and I found my niche, working in recreation with seniors and people with disabilities. My goal is to be able to help as many people as possible improve the quality of their lives.

Lesson 2 – Pay Attention to Mental Health

Eating good food and working out is not the only way we can stay healthy. Our minds are fragile and they need just as much attention as the rest of our body. Mental health issues, even though it effects something like 1 in 4 of us, is still not often talked about.  This year we said good bye to two men that I would never have thought were unhappy. They beamed happiness when you were around them and they made everyone feel like their best friends. They were both always down for a laugh and another adventure. It turned out though in both cases, they were feeling dark inside and trying hard to hide it. I don’t know if anyone could have prevented these tragedies because both men felt that they had to deal with a lot of these issues alone. So please look into your local mental health authority, find out what you can about the issues and reach out to those in need. Be there to listen if someone needs and please let the men in your life know that they can show their emotions and be vulnerable, and maybe we can prevent a few more losses.

Lesson 3 – If You’re Only Going To Do It Once… Do It Right!

This year the Mr and I got married! yay us! We’d been dating for about 7 years… so about time. When I started planning I thought a small understated wedding was what we wanted. HAHAHA. Turns out between us our family makes for a large wedding, and then we still wanted to invite our friends. So we went all out and I could not have been happier with how it turned out. There were several times during the planning process that I thought “do I really need this” and the answer was usually a resounding YES! The Mr did veto a couple of really amazing ideas that I had… but that was probably for the better. We ended up hosting the wedding of the century, everyone had a blast and I will remember it forever. Go big or go home! Check out our Books and Bikes wedding.

lesson 4 – Painting One Room Is Fun – But a Whole Basement Suite Is A Lot Of Work

The only reason I have ever really wanted to own my own home is so that I could renovate. The process of knocking out walls and building something new, choosing colours and fun little pieces to accent a room, it sounded like so much fun, and if I was doing one room it might have been, but by the third room it gets a little tiring. There is so much more that goes into a proper renovation then you think there’s going to be! The real lesson learnt here is, when you start a project, research it and know what your doing, and finish a project before you start the next… otherwise you end up with no floor boards in one room, an unpainted patch in another and a lot of frustration.

Lesson 5 – Plan For Happiness

I have come to realize in the last while that the happiest people are not just happy by chance. They set goals and worked hard for what they wanted. They planned to be happy! I wish that I had known this was a thing when I was younger – I wouldn’t have spent so much time waiting for opportunity to knock, I would have called and booked the damn appointment! Find what you love and make it happen people!

2016 was a year of lessons. I think that most of all I learnt that time is the most precious of our possessions and that we should spend it wisely. Make the most of every day, with the people you love, doing the things that make you happy. Take care of your body and your mind and smile whenever possible. Please take these lessons with you into the new year and plan to make it the best year ever.
