Don’t stress the holiday’s

Happy December Everyone and Merry Christmas!

I am so excited that the Holiday season is finally here! With all the negativity in the world I think we could all use a reason to celebrate! I know some of you out there all Grinchy and hating my cheery disposition already! Please don’t leave! I want to try to change your mind!

For many people the holiday season is incredibly stressful time, but I’m here to share a little secret with you… it’s not supposed to be! Seriously! I know! SHOCKING right?!

Now everyone, let’s start by taking a deep breath, pour yourself a glass of eggnog, sit back in that computer chair and relax, because I am going to drop some real important truths on you.

Christmas has become commercial – but you don’t have to be

I hear so many people lately harping on how commercial christmas has become. Well I hate to break it to you, but it was commercial when I was a kid, probably started getting pretty commercial when my parents were kids and there were no commercials when our grandparents were kids. The world has gone commercial, but you don’t have to be.

Gift giving is only one part of christmas, and a very small part at that, and there is a level of joy that comes from giving gifts to our loved ones, but it gets to a point that you have to ask, at what cost. At the cost of dept, loss of sanity and a stomach ulcers caused by going into the mall! Nope! Not for me!

This year take the non commercial approach to Christmas! Spend time not money! Cook dinner for your bestie and plan a day in the snow with your kids. Offer to help your parents with a task that’s needed to get done now for a while (if my parents are reading this, yes I know about the disaster that is your garage). A gift can get lost in the clutter of our homes, but a good memory can last a lifetime!

If you absolutely must shop, go local

I Love craft shows! Oh they are such amazing things. All the brilliant creative minds of the area come together in one place to offer you fun and unique options for your Christmas shopping! Candles, and one of kind art work, sculptures and hand crocheted cowls! How can you go wrong!? Added bonus, your supporting a small local business or a creative entrepreneur who’s just trying to get their art out into the world, instead of adding to the mass crowds filling through Wal-mart.

If you’re in a smaller area that doesn’t have extensive craft shows like we do, check out Etsy! You can find most anything there and it’s all hand-made! I used a couple different Etsy seller’s this year while planning my wedding and I couldn’t have been happier!

Remember the Reasons for the Seasons

Whether you go to church or you join your family in an all night games night on Christmas eve, remember that we celebrate christmas to honour family, love and peace. It’s a time when we focus on the importance of giving, especially to those who have less than yourself, and we should focus on being thankful for all that we have.

It’s also a season to come together and wear ugly sweaters, drink delicious egg nog and stuff our faces with delicious food! You should be watching corny holiday movies while wrapped up in the blanket, or sitting by the fire and roasting marshmallows. It’s a season when we get to see our co workers inappropriately drunk and to maybe get a wee bit tipsy ourselves (not that I condone any of this…but it is the holiday). It only comes around once a year… so enjoy it!

Take a moment for yourself

I think it’s safe to say that if you are reading this you’re a woman and a caregiver, either for your children, a parent or a spouse. These people are really important to you, and don’t you think they deserve you at your best? Not stressed out anxious and frazzled!

You’re going to hear me say this a lot.. you cannot take care of others if you cannot take care of yourself!

So send the kids to a friend’s house and let your husband go play in the snow with his friends and take a day for yourself! Forget that its christmas and that there are probably things to do, run a nice hot bath, light some candles and relax. You totally deserve this! You NEED this! And when you’re fully rejuvenated then you can be the everything to your family and friends again. You can give it your all because your all there!

Happy Holidays to all!

So please give that credit card a break and pick up the phone and call your great-aunt, she hasn’t talked to you in so long. Go down to the food bank and give them a helping hand. Take your kids ice skating and snowshoeing and build snowmen and then drink hot chocolate together while playing some board games…oh doesn’t that sound nice!

Theres no need to stress the holidays – this is meant to be fun 😉

  1. Love how you mentioned giving the best version of ourselves which means we need to take care of ourselves, too. If I am relaxed and enjoying each moment my family will be, too!

    1. Right!? So many caregivers tire themselves out!

  2. I needed this reminder! I feel like this holiday season is busier than ever. I don’t think I’ve had this many occasions to attend. Which is amazing! It means I have so much to be grateful for – family and loved ones. 🙂

    1. Thats so exciting! Getting together with everyone over the holidays is what it should be about!
